Task calendar display modes

1 min read

For the “Today” page and certain date-based views in the “Tasks” page, the user has the option of displaying an alternative time based view of tasks instead of the default column based task list.

These alternative time-based views of task scheduling are only relevant if the user is interested in allocating a scheduled time to a task. The ‘Edit task’ form has a scheduled time field.

Clicking on the scheduled time clock button will open a popup form that allows the user to choose a day part, or a specific time.

By way of example, the default display format for a Tasks page week view is to show one column for each day of the week.

The week view configuration allows this to be changed so that each column can be shown time in different forms.

The content display can be changed to alternatives other than list, such as:

  • Day parts: this shows a separate row in each column for ‘Morning’ , ‘Noon’, ‘Afternoon’ and ‘Evening’.
  • Hours: this shows a separate row in each column at a 30 minute time interval over the day
  • Hours & day parts: this shows a mixture of both day parts and hours.

Changing the configuration to have a ‘Content display’ by ‘Day parts’ would have the view refreshed to show each day as two columns:

The first ‘Day part’ column shows tasks that have been assigned to either a specific day part or a scheduled time that falls within that day part time range. The second column shows any tasks that do not have a scheduled time.

With this type of multi-column display a task can be dragged from the ‘Any time’ column to a specific day part row The drag ‘n drop action will automatically update the task to have a scheduled time equivalent to the day part into which it was dropped.

The second time-based content display option is ‘Hours’, and in this mode each day is shown as two columns: the first has a row for each half hour of the day, the second is used to hold tasks that do not have a scheduled time.

Similar drag ‘n drop actions can be made from the ‘Any time’ area to a specific hour row.

The third time-based content display option is ‘Hours & day parts’, and in this mode each day is shown as three columns: the first column has a row for each half hour of the day, the second column is for day parts, and the third column is used to hold tasks that do not have a scheduled time.

Tasks can be dragged between the different columns and rows, and will be automatically have their scheduled time set to the row/column into which it was dropped.
